World Refugee Day Radio Project (2010)

This project offered a rare and unique opportunity for five young people with refugee backgrounds to be guided through the process of creating, developing and producing their own radio dramas for broadcast on Radio New Zealand National in celebration of World Refugee Day 2010.

The foundation of this project was individual workshops with a skilled arts-facilitator; the aim was to nurture new forms of self-expression and to support the creative exploration and development of each participant’s story of choice. The result is five unique and very different stories exploring themes of loss, separation, re-birth, true love, and misunderstanding. The stories aired on Radio New Zealand National 21^st June – 25^th June 2010 and are now part of RNZ’s permanent on-line collection. This project was funded by The Department of Labour.

2008 – 2009 – Theatre for Change Projects

On location at Otaki Children’s Health Camp children learn new tools for expression and communication through drama and create their own performance for camp residents, staff and whanau.

August 2008 – Cross-Generational Theatre Project

In partnership with the Museum of Wellington, Wellington East Girls College and Village at the Park this cross generational project brought together teenagers and the elderly to explore the nature of memory.

June 2008 – World Refugee Day Radio Programme

Into its second year, a group of young people with refugee backgrounds come together to create their own radio programme to celebrate World Refugee Day.

September 2007 – Theatre for Change Project

June 2007 – “Voice of Youth” Radio Project

A series of workshops for refugees to facilitate the creation, production and performance of a one hour radio show for Access Radio to celebrate World Refugee Day June 20th. Funded by the UNHCR.

October 2006 – “Where Do I Come From”

A one week intensive drama project working with 12 Sudanese teenagers exploring issues of culture and identity and loss.

April 2006 – “Who am I” Arts Project

Working with prisoners at Rimutaka Prison’s Youth Unit this project focused on issues of identity with a performance of a devised work for staff and whanau at the projects conclusion.

March 2006 – Sexual Health Arts Project

A project working with young people who use the hang-out space at Evolve Youth Centre. They created a short film “The A-Z of Sexual Self Esteem.”

October 2005 – Mental Health Arts Project

Working with youth workers at Evolve Youth Centre, this project culminated in the creation and performance of “Inside My Head, Out of My Mind” which told the story of three teenagers and their struggle with depression and was performed on site at the centre and at local high schools and youth forums.
